Spain: HGV drivers’ driving history could be accessible to all employers soon

Spanish professional drivers' licences and penalty points will soon be available in an online database if the government accepts the new measures of the Road Safety Law that are currently being discussed. Some of the new measures of the Road Safety Law currently being discussed in the Spanish parliament directly aim at the road transport sector writes Fenadismer, the National Federation of Transport Associations of Spain.

One of the new proposals would allow employers to track down their professional drivers’ driving history: for example the penalty points they have received or if their license has been revoked.

If the proposal is accepted, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT – the General Directorate of Traffic) will have one year to build an online platform where companies and freelancers dedicated to the transport of people or goods can check if a driver working for them is legally authorized to drive a given vehicle. The measure will allow employers to do this without the former consent of the driver.

The Spanish government is also discussing the introduction of periodic, or random controls of both alcohol and drug consumption for freight and passenger drivers.
