The vessel, named Green Sealion 27500, was unveiled at the SMM Hamburg Maritime Exhibition on 3 September and has been granted an Approval in Principle (AiP) certificate by the DNV classification society.

This new ship surpasses the capacity of the largest containerships currently in operation by over 3,000 TEU. Until now, the record for the biggest containership belonged to Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), whose fleet includes vessels with a capacity of 24,346 TEU, delivered last year.

The Green Sealion 27500 marks a notable achievement in the ongoing expansion of vessel sizes within the shipping industry. It features a highly optimised hull shape aimed at increasing fuel efficiency and has been designed to operate with zero emissions while moored, thanks to its ability to connect to shore power sources.

Additionally, the vessel is powered by a dual-fuel system, utilising both liquefied natural gas (LNG) and conventional fuel, further supporting its environmentally friendly credentials.

The announcement is part of a broader unveiling by CSSC at the SMM Hamburg Maritime Exhibition, where the company also introduced other new vessel designs. These included the Green Sealion 20000, a 20,000 TEU ammonia dual-fuel containership, and the Green Sealion 16000, a 16,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel vessel boasting a wide-body construction for increased cargo capacity and energy efficiency.

CSSC also showcased two modern liquefied gas carriers: a 103,000 cubic metre Very Large Ethane Carrier (VLEC) and a 93,000 cubic metre Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC), both featuring new propulsion systems and energy-saving technologies.
