Hegelmann Group issue statement after subcontractor is accused of “modern slavery”

Readers may recall that in the days before Christmas, a Belgian trade union slammed the logistics companies responsible for a Ukrainian trucker spending 17 weeks in his cab with nothing to live on other than a few euros worth of credit on an expenses card. The case involved a subcontractor of the Hegelmann Group, who have now issued a statement regarding the matter.

The statement, signed by shareholders Siegfried Hegelmann and Anton Hegelmann, reads as follows:

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is with great regret that we read the current reporting. We are shocked and have confronted the subcontractor with the allegations. An internal commission of our company will fully clarify the incident in accordance with our standards. Of course, we reserve the right to take legal action.

Trustful and constructive communication and appreciation towards our partners as well as all employees is a central point in the long-standing company philosophy of our company, therefore we take the current reporting very seriously and act accordingly – you can rely on this as a partner of our company.

All employees of the Hegelmann Group as well as all subcontractors, suppliers and partners are subject to our CODE OF CONDUCT. This code of conduct speaks an unmistakable language: mutual respect, honesty, integrity, avoidance of conflicts of interest, anti-corruption, fair competition, environmental protection, health, safety and much more have the highest priority for our company. As a company, we take consistent action against violations.
