A 72-year-old lorry driver who had been working in the Merseyside area has lost his job and ended up £640 out of pocket after pleading guilty to tachograph manipulation.

As reported by the St Helens star, the lorry driver, Arthur Skillern, learned his fate at Liverpool, Knowsley and St Helens Magistrates’ Court on the 1st of December.

According to the report, the driver’s tachograph offences took place between November 2021 and January 2022 in the Merseyside area.

The trucker was handed a fine on one count of manipulating tachograph records. He nonetheless avoided separate penalties for his seven other tachograph violations.

It is said that the lorry driver is no longer working for the company who had been employing him when the tachograph offences occurred.

Caroline Hicks, DVSA’s head enforcement regulatory services and transformation, is quoted as saying the following regarding the case:

“Drivers’ hours rules are there to protect drivers and other road users from the effects of travelling tired on long journeys. Tired drivers have slower reaction times and reduced awareness, so are more likely to be involved in a serious collision. Exceeding the limits and falsifying records is an offence and we will help keep people safe, by enforcing these rules.”

The driver was fined £400 and ordered to pay £200 in costs. There was a £40 surcharge on top of that, putting Mr Skillern £640 out of pocket.
