Tachograph replacement: a complete guide for hauliers and drivers [DOWNLOAD]

By the end of this year, the oldest tachographs in vehicles used for international transport will need to be replaced. Hauliers and drivers will be required to use the latest second-generation smart tachographs. But how do these new devices differ from the ones previously in use? Which tachograph manufacturer should you choose? And will it still be possible to use so-called transitional tachographs? All of these questions are addressed in the Trans.INFO guide.

Time is running out. The oldest tachographs, including analogue tachographs and first-generation (G1) tachographs, must be replaced by 31 December 2024.

The obligation to replace these tachographs with a second-generation smart tachograph applies to hauliers operating vehicles registered for the first time in an EU Member State. This requirement is specific to vehicles used for international transport within the European Union, particularly in a Member State other than the one in which the vehicle is registered.

Failing to have the correct tachograph in the European Union can lead to hefty fines—up to 30,000 euros—or even a year in prison.

The international editorial team at Trans.INFO has prepared a practical, step-by-step guide to selecting, replacing, and using new tachographs.

In the guide, you will learn:

  • who is exempt from the obligation to replace the tachograph,
  • what expenses are involved in the replacement process,
  • whether it will still be possible to use so-called transitional tachographs,
  • how to comply with the extended data storage requirements.
