This Tuesday, German road police noticed a lorry parked on a cycle path in the outskirts of Bochum. By the end of the routine check, officers had dished out a fine of over 14,200 euros. However, the huge fee wasn’t entirely down to the parking violation.

For three months, the special traffic control force of the Bochum police had been regularly patrolling in this outskirts of Bochum, as dangerous traffic situations often arise there, including illegal parking of both trucks and tractor units.

When the police officers spoke to the driver, he was completely unapologetic and loudly expressed his views on police control. However, he immediately became more subdued once he noticed that the tachograph was also being read and evaluated during the check.

During the control period of 28 calendar days, police detected several speeding violations. More serious, however, was the fact the driver violated the permitted driving and rest times almost every day.

The officers at the scene were briefly speechless when the digital readout from their software calculated a fine of 14,200 euros, say local police. Of course, they didn’t forget to add on a fine of 20 euros for the actual parking violation.

Presumably the driver would have loved to pay for the fine on the spot and leave, but he and his employer will now have to face a court hearing.
