Tilburg to introduce zero-emission zone in 2025

The municipality of Tilburg in the Netherlands will introduce a zero-emission zone (ZEZ) at the start of next year. However, due to opposition from businesses, local authorities have scaled back the zone's size from the original proposal.

Starting January 1, 2025, only zero-emission vans and trucks registered after this date will be permitted within the zone. The ZEZ will encompass the area within the city’s ring roads.

A draft traffic decision, initially approved by the municipal council in March, had proposed including Ringbaan-Oost (between the railway viaduct and the junction with Ringbaan-Zuid) and the Armhoef and Jerusalem districts. However, feedback from residents and businesses led to the exclusion of these two neighbourhoods, reducing the ZEZ to the same area as the existing environmental zone.

Tilburg Zero Emission Zone access requirements

To access the ZEZ, vans registered from January 1, 2025, must be zero-emission. Vans with emission class Euro 4 or lower will be prohibited. Euro 5 vans have access until January 1, 2027, and Euro 6 vans until January 1, 2028.

For heavy-duty vehicles, all trucks registered from January 1, 2025, must be zero-emission to enter the ZEZ. “Solo trucks” (trucks without trailers) meeting Euro 6 standards and first registered between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2019, will have access until January 1, 2028. Euro 6 solo trucks up to 5 years old on January 1, 2025, and Euro 6 tractor units up to 8 years old on the same date will have access until January 1, 2030.
