The track access charges in rail freight transport have been extended until 30 November 2028.

The Federal Government is closely monitoring the development of track access charges and their impact on rail freight transport. Despite limited financial resources, we continue to advocate for adequate funding of the track access charge subsidy in this sector and are allocating approximately €229 million for 2024,” said Michael Theurer, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and Federal Government Commissioner for Rail Transport.

The amount of the track access charge subsidy from 2025 onwards will be determined following the ongoing budget negotiations.

The BMDV also stated that the track access charge subsidy will remain a transitional measure until the rail freight sector can achieve greater competitiveness through enhanced digitalisation and automation.
