A truck driver and haulier have both received 4-figure fines from the Dutch road police for tachograph manipulation. According to the police, the trucker did not hesitate to point out he was using a magnet.

Writing on Twitter, the Dutch commercial vehicle inspectorate say the truck was pulled over during checks on the A12 near Bodegraven.

The inspectors saw that there was no driving time in the tachograph when checked, and then the driver “immediately indicated he had used a magnet” . The lorry driver was fined €1,500 and his employers were also handed a penalty of €4,400.

Vetron, one of the Netherland’s road transport associations, nonetheless appeared unimpressed by the fines. Also writing on Twitter, the association claimed that fines of around €50,000 are necessary, otherwise “they will never learn.”

A day earlier, the Dutch road police administered another fine for €4,400, again for tachograph and drivers’ hours rules.

According to the commercial vehicle inspectorate, violations were suspected but could not be proven. However, after contacting their Polish colleagues, it was found that the truck in questions had violated road transport rules.
