Although the automatic height measuring system warned a trucker his lorry wouldn’t be able to drive under a low bridge, he tried it anyway. The result was predictable – it took over four hours for the rescuers to remove the trailer from under bridge in Neustadt, Germany. The damage to the trailer is estimated at €8,000.

The incident occurred on Tuesday and involved a Polish articulated lorry. The 61-year-old Georgian driver drove his lorry into Neustadt in the direction of Bahnhofstrasse, ignoring the height limit at the railway underpass.

Although the electronic height control system before the bridge warned the driver that his vehicle was too high, he ignored the signal and just drove straight into the railway underpass.

The trailer roof hit the bridge and eventually got stuck.

The incident happened early in the evening, but it wasn’t until around 22:30 that the lorry could be freed. Until then, half of the road had to be closed.

The trailer suffered damage of approx 8,000 euros. Luckily, the bridge wasn’t seriously damaged – apart from minor concrete spalling, no further damage has been detected.

According to the photo another lorry driver shot later on, the trailer still continued its journey on the road. Whether it was safe do so or not is another question.
