A lorry driver has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined an incredible €1.7 million after being found hauling 900kg of cannabis last Monday near Perthus in France.

The Romanian driver has also been banned from entering France for ten years according to France Bleu.

Police arrested the 50-year-old trucker last Monday in Perthus, near France’s border with Spain. Some 900kg of cannabis was found hidden in his truck, which was headed for Germany.

The cannabis resin was hidden among crates of lemons from Spain. 60kg of herbal cannabis was also found by customs officials.

Customs officers working at French/Spanish border are not unaccustomed to dealing with drug smuggling. In 2020, Perpignan customs seized a total of 9.4 tonnes of illegal drugs.
