Road police conducting checks as part of UN Global Road Safety Week were left stunned last week as their inspection led to the discovery of 9 people crammed inside an uninsured and defective Skoda Octavia – including two women squeezed in the boot.

Writing about the discovery on Facebook, North Yorkshire Police said “We always expect the unexpected when we stop a vehicle… But this one took us totally by surprise.”

The vehicle was stopped in Norton, Malton, during targeted deployments for UN Global Road Safety Week.

According to the police, 2 were sat in the vehicle’s front seats, with 5 crammed in the back and 2 more in the boot.

Officers also found that the car was uninsured and had a front tyre that was so badly worn the inner cord was exposed. Moreover, two of its doors didn’t open.

Keen to stress how dangerous the vehicle was to other road users, North Yorkshire Police said the car “would have caused utter carnage” had it been involved in accident.

If it had been involved in a collision, the consequences don’t bear thinking about. It would have caused utter carnage.

Officers seized the vehicle, while its driver was reported for dangerous driving and having no insurance. Taxis were ordered for nine passengers crammed into the car.

North Yorkshire Police say they shall be continuing their targeted road safety deployments throughout the summer and beyond “to keep everyone safe and take illegal drivers and vehicles off the road.”
