The annual Green Truck comparative test is a comprehensive and independent study of the performance of heavy goods vehicles organised by the German trade magazines Trucker and Verkehrs-Rundschau.
The aim of the comparison is to find the most fuel-efficient truck for long-distance transport. The study compared 32-tonne trucks (GCW – Gross Combination Weight), with high cabins, 390 HP (± 50 HP) diesel engines, new tyres, and 3-axle trailers with a load capacity of 24 tonnes.
The test was conducted on a 343-km route in southern Germany, which included motorways and country roads. The Volvo FH Aero, which won the Green Truck 2025, achieved an average speed of 80.14 km/h on the test route. The model used in the test had a 420 HP D13 engine and the I-Save package, as well as the new Camera Monitor System, which reduces fuel consumption by positively affecting aerodynamics. The truck had an average fuel consumption of 21.20 l/100 km on the test route.
“With our victory in the Green Truck competition, Volvo Trucks has a hat-trick! First, we were the only brand to receive five stars in the first Euro NCAP safety test for trucks, then we became the largest truck brand in Europe in 2024. And now the Volvo FH Aero is the most fuel-efficient truck in an independent test – I am proud of all these achievements!” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
The Volvo FH Aero was launched in early 2024 and features a new, aerodynamic cab that saves up to 5% fuel and reduces CO₂ emissions compared to the standard version. It offers a combination of good aerodynamics and an efficient drive system, which, according to an independent test, saves fuel and reduces CO₂ emissions.
“I am proud to see that this external test confirms that our vehicle truly delivers exceptional fuel efficiency, reducing CO₂ emissions and operating costs for our customers every day,” says Jan Hjelmgren, Director of Product Management at Volvo Trucks.
“We will continue to drive innovations and improvements in fuel efficiency that benefit both the climate and the productivity of transport companies. Fuel consumption accounts for a significant part of our customers’ operating costs, so we know that our efforts make a difference,” adds Jan Hjelmgren.
The new Volvo FH Aero model series is available in four versions – in addition to the combustion engine version, there is also an electric model, a gas-powered model, and the FH16 Aero. The diesel and gas-powered versions can use renewable fuels such as biogas, biodiesel, and HVO.
