Despite having the highest number of EVs per capita in the world, Norway's heavy vehicles contribute around 9% of the country's CO2 emissions, equivalent to 4.4 million tonnes of CO2.

“Given Norway's pioneering work in electrifying passenger vehicles, it's only logical that they should take a leading role in the electrification of heavy-duty freight as well,” said Robert Falck, Founder and CEO of Einride. “As we deploy our electric fleets and build out the necessary infrastructure to ensure reliable and sufficient freight transportation throughout Scandinavia, we are honored to contribute to these efforts and help maintain Norway's leading position in electric transportation.”

Einride plans to deploy electric fleets and build the necessary infrastructure to support reliable and sufficient freight transport across Scandinavia, thereby strengthening Norway's leadership in electric mobility. In collaboration with PostNord, the major postal service responsible for 35% of all postal shipments in Scandinavia, Einride will electrify fleets in Norway, marking its expansion into a second market. Following the successful electrification of PostNord's fleets in Sweden in 2022, this partnership will cover over 1,500 km of daily transport previously dependent on fossil fuels. The transition is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 95% compared to diesel trucks, resulting in the elimination of 2,100 tonnes of CO2 emissions over three years.

Grids to power Norway's connection to mainland Europe

Einride's freight ecosystem is based on a grid system facilitated by the Einride Saga platform. The grid simplifies long-haul freight management, minimises industry inefficiencies and avoids delays due to loading or driver changes. Einride oversees all logistical aspects, including software, charging infrastructure and maintenance, to ensure a high-quality service.

The expansion of Einride in Norway will extend the Nordic Link network, connecting strategic locations in the Oslo region. This network will continue to expand southwards, connecting Norway, Sweden and eventually, Denmark along the E6 motorway, enabling electric, digital and autonomous cross-border transport throughout Scandinavia. Einride aims to connect the Nordic Link to mainland Europe by 2025. To support its electric truck fleet, Einride will build its own charging infrastructure, Einride Stations, along the network in Norway. These stations will be strategically located based on insights from Einride's digital platform to ensure efficient scaling of electric fleets. Einride's involvement in the MODI project, a €28 million initiative co-funded by the EU and coordinated by ITS Norway, is progressing well. Einride is the leading autonomous partner in the 42-month project, which aims to support the introduction of heavy autonomous transport by addressing standardisation, regulation and infrastructure. In the Norwegian use case, Einride's autonomous vehicle will cross national borders for the first time, demonstrating operations on a selected section of the E6 motorway between Gothenburg and Oslo. It has now been announced that the first demonstrations will take place in 2025.
