A smart tyre that pumps as you drive? One of the manufacturers is already on it

The tyre manufacturer Continental has developed an electrified and connected system for wheels and tyres to optimise fuel consumption. How is it possible? Tyres will pump themselves, even while driving.

Conti C.A.R.E. (Connected. Autonomous. Reliable. Electrified) – a new invention from Continental, is a comprehensive technology system that replaces traditional rims and tyres.

Instead, the manufacturer offers a solution that combines rim and tyre technology to maintain the right performance while driving. This is possible thanks to special sensors that generate and analyse data on tyre temperature and pressure and active pressure regulation by means of centrifugal pumps integrated in the wheels. When the vehicle accelerates, the centrifugal force in the rim acts on the pump, producing compressed air, explains the manufacturer.

Sensors also collect and analyse information on tread depth and possible damage that goes into the ContiConnect™ Live app, facilitating efficient mobility management for fleet operators. In addition, the wheel rim has been modified to reduce vibrations generated during driving.

As the manufacturer claims, data from the Conti C.A.R.E. system are closely aligned with the requirements of electric and autonomous driving in both individual and shared mobility scenarios.
