Heavy vehicles restricted on Dutch A12 viaduct at Velperbroek junction

Heavy goods vehicles exceeding 45 tons will be prohibited from using the A12 viaducts at Velperbroek interchange in the Netherlands starting Thursday, 19 December. The decision follows research revealing that the viaducts' steel reinforcement is aging faster than initially anticipated, raising safety concerns.

Rijkswaterstaat, the Dutch infrastructure authority, announced that as a precautionary measure, signs will be installed to enforce the new weight restriction. Heavy vehicles will be required to leave the A12 at the Velperbroek interchange and re-enter via a nearby roundabout, known as the Velperbroek circuit.

Additionally, a support structure will be installed under the viaducts in the coming months to bolster safety. However, this measure cannot be implemented immediately as the design phase for the structure is still underway.

The viaducts at Velperbroek handle approximately 65,000 vehicles daily, including around 1,000 trucks exceeding the new weight limit on working days. The interchange is a critical link in Gelderland’s road network, meaning the restriction could have significant implications for regional logistics and freight movement.

Further updates regarding the safety measures and their potential impact on road users are expected in the coming months.
