Although the Calais immigrant camp was disbanded at the beginning of October 2016 it is unlikely that the next summer in Calais will be different from the previous one. That is the conclusion of the UK Road Haulage Association (RHA) carrier organisation the President of which, Richard Burnett, visited Calais on 23-24 March.
The purpose of the expedition was to check the situation of truck drivers who drive from Europe to the UK. Within an hour of arriving the British journalists and RHA boss witnessed an assault on the truck the driver of which left for a moment. Journalists who have recorded all this on their smartphones have also been attacked by a group of angry refugees.
The assaults were provoked by human traffickers. Groups of refugees appeared each time a truck drove past.
Also near Calais, about 64 km from the town, on the carpark and the Aire de Service gas station on the A25 motorway, which for most drivers is the last stop before the tunnel, drivers are often disturbed by groups of men who want to get to the UK. It turns out that places that due to their location should be monitored and protected function as if the refugee crisis never happened.
The RHA organisation reminds that in October last year they issued warnings that the removal of the so-called Calais Jungle will not be an effective solution to the problem as refugees will return sooner or later. Brunett claims that this year’s summer in Calais will not be any different and will be a hellish experience for truck drivers whose route goes through the English Channel.
