The Hungarian Road Haulage Association (MKFE), referring to information from the Ministry of Construction and Transport (ÉKM), said on 4 November that the system, which automatically fines overweight lorries, will be back in operation in a few weeks. The authority had previously deactivated this penalty system following pressure from hauliers’ organisations.
According to the ministry, the system will only operate at reliable metering points.
The TSM weighpoints are designed to provide objective overweight monitoring and the system will send immediate notifications to road control units if overweight is detected. This is particularly important for trucks with foreign registration plates, so that they can be stopped and sanctioned before they leave the country, the authority explains.
MKFE said that the ministry applies a 10% margin of error for objective measurements, which applies to both the total weight and the weight of each axle.
In addition, MKFE reported that a new “anti-sabotage” feature will be added to the system, which will allow sanctions for deliberate evasion of measurement results. According to MKFE, this will be introduced at those stations where there is a “Roadside Control” sign in front of the TSM measuring point and the lanes are separated by a continuous white line to ensure that all vehicles pass through the measuring points safely.
This means that those who avoid the measurement can be fined up to HUF 300 000 (approx 733 euros).
The exact date of the relaunch has not yet been announced.
