Bridge over the Rhine closed to trucks

Due to damage to the bridge structure, the Krefeld Bridge has been closed to trucks since Friday, September 13th.

The bridge at Krefeld-Uerdingen (North Rhine-Westphalia) on the B288 federal road has been closed to heavy goods vehicles with a GVW of more than 7.5 tons. This is due to the damage that has significantly weakened the load-bearing capacity of the structure. According to engineers from the North Rhine-Westphalia Road Construction Board, the damage can be repaired. The repair plan is to be drawn up by mid-October this year.

Unfortunately, until the bridge is repaired, we can expect a lot of communication chaos, reads the portal wdr.de.

The Krefeld Bridge is an important link between a harbour and an industrial park on the other side of the Rhine. As a result, from Friday afternoon, trucks have to bypass the bridge and head towards the A40 or A44 motorway.

These are very long detours,” said Marco Hover from the North Rhine-Westphalia Transport Association in an interview with wdr.de. “They are not good from an economic point of view, and they are also disastrous for the environment,” he added.
