Bridge reopens 4 months after trucker hauling cement mixer ignored 3.5-ton limit

A historic bridge near Lyon with a 3.5-ton limit has reopened over four months after a trucker crossed it while hauling a cement mixer weighing 20-tons. The heavy truck damaged the bridge and meant repairs had to be carried out.

At the time the incident occured, Fabien Bagnon, Vice-President of the metropolis of Lyon, said that the situation was “close to a real disaster”.

In a smartphone video of the incident that was uploaded to social media, a man can be heard saying in French “the bridge is cracking!” amid audible cracking noises.

Fortunately, the trucker made it across and the bridge remained intact. However, the bridge was damaged and had to completely close – even to pedestrians and cyclists.

The driver of the truck was identified by the police and was expected to face charges.

According to local news website Lyon Mag, the bridge is now once again open to traffic after several reinforcements were made.
