Austrian hauliers call for more strict cabotage checks

WKÖ, an association representing Austrian hauliers, has called for more strict cabotage checks to be introduced in country. The association says strict inspections are required to deter foreign road transport firms with lower fuel costs from performing more transports in Austria than allowed.

According to Austrian road transport website Traktuell, WKÖ chairman Markus Fischer wants strict cabotage checks to defend Austrian hauliers as much as possible.

“If foreign competitors fill up cheaply in neighboring countries and then carry out transports in Austria, that is an additional distortion of competition. That’s why strict cabotage controls are necessary,” Fischer is quoted as saying.

In June 2022, the price of diesel in Austria surpassed €2 per litre, which is a 67% increase on the price in the same month in 2021.

Data from globalpetrolprices.com shows that all of Austria’s EU neighbours have lower diesel prices, with the biggest disparity being with Slovenia.

Amid the fuel price crisis, Fischer appealed for action to aid Austrian hauliers:

“The enormous additional costs cannot be left to the transport companies. This year alone, transport costs have risen by more than ten percent. In some business areas, the increases were even higher,” the WKÖ chairman said on Wednesday.
