“Huckepack” means “piggyback”. In one of the districts of Paris, Dachser is testing new solution for urban transport – clever combination of a 19-ton truck and a small electric vehicle.
Logisticians conducting deliveries in the cities are facing real challenges. Increasing traffic and customer requirements, greater time pressure and fierce competition in the market have forced them to seek new effective solutions for urban deliveries.
GLS, just like DHL, provides deliveries in German cities by using delivery bicycles. Dachser, on the other hand, began to test the Huckepack solution. It is described by the German transport portal dvz.de.
What is the concept of the Huckepack?
The innovative concept has been created by Libner in Saint-Maixent in the south west of France. The German word “huckepack” means “piggyback”. This name of the solution is non-accidental, as it involves the larger vehicle – 19-ton truck – dragging a smaller, electric vehicle.
Upon arrival to the city, the big truck is parked in the parking lot reserved for transport by the city. The 19-ton giant is a kind of hub for the smaller vehicle. A pallet of shipments with a maximum weight of 600 kg is moved to the small electric car. The vehicle leaves the truck through the lowered ramp and moves on to customers in the area. After all packages are delivered, it comes back for another palette.
The car is eco-friendly. It reaches the speed of up to 50 km/h and can move even on the sidewalks to bypass traffic jams. Its range with fully charged battery is 120 km.
According to Pascal Renavand, Chief of Dachser in Pantin near Paris, the concept of Huckepack is going to change the face of urban distribution. This new solution is not only ecological, but also allows to increase performance.
For now, the truck with an electric “piggyback” car is being tested in the streets of the 14. district of Paris. Renavand is already convincing the city authorities to implement Huckepack in districts from 1. to 4. – they show the most intense traffic, and thus a better proving ground for our new solution.
