When it comes to bridge strikes, there’s normally only one winner. However, that wasn’t the case during a recent accident in the Polish town of Sieraków, where a truck hauling a crane and building materials smashed into a disused railway crossing.
As photos from the police show, the impact caused by the crane hitting the bridge caused the structure to collapse on top of the vehicle.
Fortunately, the 37-year-old driver in the truck avoided injury despite the severity of the accident, which occurred yesterday morning at around 11am local time.
Officers criticised the lorry driver for failing to take “due care” and ignoring the signs that inform road users of the low bridge.
The driver nonetheless appears to have ensured that none of his fellow truckers will ever strike the same bridge again. As the crossing is no longer in use, it is thought that the bridge won’t be replaced, thereby making the road it crosses accessible to HGVs and trailers of all shapes and sizes.
