A married couple comprising of two truckers could potentially be jailed for as long as three years after they were alleged to have swapped their tachograph cards to get round the rules on obligatory rest times.

The officers of the Spanish Civil Guard pulled over the couple’s vehicle on Spain’s A-31 highway as part of a routine inspection.

The agents then realised that both drivers had offended the drivers’ hours’ regulations and falsified their tachograph prints by swapping their cards while driving.

If the couple are found guilty of the crime, they could face a prison sentences of between six months and three years.

The fate of the couple, who are resident in the province from Alicante but of foreign nationality, will now be a matter for the courts.
