27 years after the start of the construction, the highway connecting Dresden to Prague is open for transport at four lanes along its entire length.

The D8 highway is a Czech part of the important international route E55 and, along with the German A17, forms a highway connection between Prague and Dresden.
Polish drivers and carriers travelling to Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and Greece know how important a route D8 is. Until D8 was finished, they often had had to, under the pressure of time, choose the more expensive alternative route through Austria (Passau-Linz-Vienna).

According to the Czech Ministry of Transport, the last bottleneck at the highway that was opened this year will be removed this week, the German transport website verkehrsrundschau.de reports. Therefore, soon the drivers will be able to travel at four lanes at the 12-kilometre route between Bilina and Rehlovice.

So far, because of the unstable ground, the movement has been restricted to one lane, and the other lanes have been subject to works intended to strengthen the ground.
