Milan City Council approves implementation of London-style DVS zone

It has been confirmed that as of October 1st, HGVs without blind spot sensors and mirrors will be prohibited access to Area B of Milan, which covers most of the city. The ban was voted through by Milan City Council and comes after numerous fatal accidents involving trucks and cyclists in recent months.

The zone covered by the new rules is Milan’s Area B, where a Low Emissions Zone is already in place. The changes mean that trucks weighing 12 tonnes and up must have blind spot safety systems installed.

Those without such a system will only be able to enter before 7.30am and after 9.30pm  on weekdays.

Another exception applies in the case of companies who have ordered blind spot systems for their vehicles.

Regarding the latter, Milan mayor Giuseppe Sala explains:

“We’re starting first with the heaviest vehicles, which are the most risky. From 1 October, they will not be able to enter if they have not installed a [blind spot] system, or they will have to demonstrate that they have placed an order. In fact, vehicles whose owners hold a purchase contract for a blind spot detection system will be able to move around the area until the device is installed and in any case no later than 31 December 2024.”

Next October, the requirement to have a blind spot safety system will be extended to trucks of 3.5 tonnes and over.
