Police stop exhausted trucker who went off-route and talked “nonsense” to haulier over the phone

In an unusual case, a haulage firm ended up getting one of its drivers in bother with the police for breaching drivers' hours rules. The trucker is said to have gone wildly off course by heading towards Germany's border with Poland, and was said to be talking “nonsense" by the company responsible for the transport.

According to Saxony Police, a haulage company called officers to express its concern with one of its drivers, who “was apparently just talking nonsense”.

In addition, the police report states that the driver, contrary to his planned route, was on his way towards Poland.

Officers soon found the lorry on the A4 and got the driver to pull over into the Oberlausitz-Süd rest area between Dresden and Bautzen.

During the check of the driver and truck, officers learned that the driver was neither drunk nor intoxicated.

However, the tachograph data did show serious violations of drivers’ hours rules. It turned out that the 41-year-old driver had driven a whopping 18 hours and 11 minutes within a period of 20 hours and 20 minutes.

The police prevented the man from continuing his journey and the haulage firm was required to bring in an replacement driver. A police investigation will later determine what charges and fines shall be issued.
