Germany has prolonged its border controls by an additional three months, with stationary checks at borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland set to continue until at least March 15 next year, according to an announcement from the German Ministry of the Interior last Friday.

The ministry emphasized the effectiveness of these measures in combating smuggling crimes and curbing illegal migration.

In alignment with Germany, Austria has also decided to extend border controls with the Czech Republic, originally set to expire on December 16, now extended until February 16. Additionally, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi announced on Friday the extension of controls with Slovenia until January 18, 2024.

Meanwhile, Slovenia has extended border controls with Croatia and Hungary until June 22, 2024, citing reasons such as the deteriorating situation in the Middle East, terrorist threats, the security situation in Afghanistan, armed clashes in various African countries, and the increasing flow of migration.

As a reminder, checks at the Polish-Slovak border are scheduled to persist until January 2 next year, and the Czechs will continue controlling the border with Slovakia until January 3, 2024.
