For the sake of drivers, Belgium wants more roadside checks in the EU

The Belgian Government is pushing the EU for stricter enforcement of road transport rules, in particular through thorough roadside checks to ensure compliance, according to a conference held in Brussels on Friday 23 February. Stricter controls would aim to protect the safety and working conditions of drivers and promote fair competition between transport companies.

Speaking at a conference in Brussels on 23 February, Georges Gilkinet, the Belgian Federal Minister for Mobility, spoke about the importance of maintaining high environmental and social standards in European mobility and stressed the need for effective roadside checks to enforce compliance with European regulations. The aim is to ensure the safety and working conditions of drivers while promoting fair competition in the road transport sector.

Pierre-Yves Dermagne, Belgian Federal Minister for Employment, stressed the importance of the measures contained in the European Mobility Package in striking a balance between the social protection of drivers and the operational freedom of transport operators. 

He emphasised the need for increased cooperation between EU Member States in order to implement these measures effectively, promote fair competition and ensure fair treatment of workers.

The federal ministers for mobility and employment present at the conference discussed the new control methods and their impact since the entry into force of the mobility package. They also had the opportunity to discuss initiatives aimed at harmonising the control approaches of the different EU countries to constantly improve cooperation.
