Forto launches new sustainable shipping option: Inset Light

European digital freight forwarder Forto has announced a new low-cost sustainability product called Insetting Light. This offering aims to reduce the environmental impact of freight shipments by utilising alternative fuels and renewable energy sources.

Insetting Light focuses on biofuels, sustainable aviation fuel, and renewable electricity instead of traditional fossil fuels. This approach applies throughout the entire shipping journey, including the main freight leg and pre-and-on-carriage transport, covering various transportation modes like sea, air, and rail.

The level of emission reduction achieved varies depending on the transport method. Ocean freight can expect a 5% reduction, air freight a 2% reduction, and rail freight a significant 50% reduction.

Forto has designed Insetting Light to be an easy and affordable way for companies to improve the sustainability of their supply chains. This option allows them to actively reduce emissions at the source actively, rather than relying solely on offsetting strategies which achieve reductions elsewhere.

Insetting Light boasts several key benefits. It is offered at a similar price point to offsetting, making it a cost-effective option. Additionally, it is easy to implement as it requires no changes to existing logistics operations. Insetting Light is also broadly applicable, being available for all transport modes, lanes, and shipment legs.

Environmental impact is a key focus of Insetting Light. It contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supports the use of sustainable fuels and energy sources. This approach aligns with the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change and the transportation industry’s aim to lower emissions.

Forto sees Insetting Light as a way to encourage its customers to embrace sustainable practices and contribute to a collective effort to reduce the environmental impact of the logistics sector, which is estimated to be responsible for around 8% of global CO2 emissions.
