The Aragon government has announced that the Tunel Bielsa, which was closed earlier this month due to damage caused by heavy rain, will be reopened.

At the time, another tunnel closure was also expected to cause serious disruptions to cross-border traffic between Spain and France.

At the beginning of September, heavy rains caused significant damage at four locations along a 10-kilometre stretch of the Bielsa tunnel, located on the Spanish-French border. However, the Spanish hauliers’ organisation, CETM, reports that the tunnel at the Bielsa-Aragnouet border crossing will reopen today.

As a reminder, the Somport tunnel on the Spain-France border was also closed earlier this month. The Spanish federation of hauliers expressed deep concern at the time about the impact of these closures, as hundreds of lorries use these routes daily to transport goods between the two countries via the Aragon and Aspe valleys. The organisation feared further traffic congestion on the already busy Irún road.
