During a live radio phone-in, a French trucker who feels disillusioned with politics in his country has challenged President Emmanuel Macron to spend a week in his cab.

In a clip from the programme hosted on the rmc.bfmtv.com website, Thierry, a truck driver who lives in Nîmes, is heard talking about his apathy for politics ahead of France’s regional elections later this month.

Thierry told listeners that at the age of 58, after voting since the age of 18, he’d now rather go cycling in his free time than vote. He said that he had got the impression that elected representatives in the country “are laughing at us”.

After a short rant about parties ganging up on the National Rally rather than presenting policies, the trucker then challenged Macron to spend a week with him on the road:

I invite Emmanuel Macron to come and spend a week with me in the truck. He can even take his bodyguards, they can be in front or behind. I invite him to go into the cabin for a week. And then he will see!

The presenter of the show the joked that “It would be a real Tour de France!”
