From 1 June foreign drivers, employed, for example, as truck drivers in Russian companies, cannot work in the Federation without valid Russian driving licences. According to the new regulations they need to be replaced. We tell you how to do it.

Controversial change

The law that came into force on Friday, applies not only to truck drivers but also buses and taxis. In addition, it provides for high fines – people who are responsible for the technical condition of the vehicle and its operation and who allowed a foreigner who does not have a Russian driving license to drive a car (truck, bus) can receive a fine of 50 thousand Rubles (about 800 euros).

As stated by Urwest law firm, the driving license requirement apply only to drivers who are employed by a Russian company. This law does not apply to drivers who carry out international transport, for example for Polish companies.

How does the procedure of replacing documents look like?

The process of replacing documents is very simple. It can be done by people who:

1. Have reached a certain age:

18 years: categories A, B, C, B1, C1;

21 years: categories D, Tm, Tb, D1;

16 years: categories M, A1;

2. Received a medical certificate of no contraindications to drive the vehicle;

3. Have completed a special driving course;

4. And most importantly – passed the exam, consisting of 3 parts: one theoretical part and two practical ones (in the car park and in the city);

Summing up. If a foreign driver wants to change their driving license to Russian, they have to submit the following documents:

  • Application;
  • Passport;
  • Medical certificate;
  • Foreign driving license;

If the driver is authorised to drive several modes of transport, they will have to pass the exam only ones (for the highest category). The documents must be submitted in the national road inspectorate (GAI) in the town in which the driver lives temporarily.
