Eurotransport.de, a transport industry website, published an interview with a carrier regarding planned changes in legislation under which weekly rest in the cabin will be penalised. German carrier, who preferred to remain anonymous, believes that the current government policy is detached from reality and will not only impact unfair competition but also medium-sized national companies.

He admits that highway nomadism should be fought with but not necessarily in such a way.

The carrier notes the lack of appropriate infrastructure:

Right now there are no proper accommodations. There are almost no motels. Will drivers have to park their trucks near hotels? Besides, the profit margin of 2.5-3% will be a financial problem also for us”.

He also adds that he provides his employees with the best possible conditions – high cabin, spring mattresses, stationary air conditioning.

What solutions does he propose?

There should be more inspections to prevent criminal practices – he declares. He adds that it would be useful to introduce relevant provisions which would apply to bus drivers. “Load from one truck can be transported by four buses” – he adds.

According to him many transport companies cannot thrive with such a competition. He also believes that German law discriminates against medium-sized enterprises.
