Currently, trucks have to be equipped with winter tyres only on wheels on the axles. The changes are due to be implemented no later than by 1 July 2020.

As announced by the German transport union DSLV, no later than by 1 July 2020, the obligation to have winter tyres during the winter conditions will apply not only to wheels on the axles but also to front steering wheels in trucks (from 3.5 t).

By 30 September 2024, the M+S tyres will be recognised as winter tyres only if they have been manufactured by the end of 2017. From 1 October, only tyres marked with the “Alpine” symbol (three-peak mountain snowflake) will be considered to be winter tyres.

The 52nd regulation amending the road traffic regulations was published on 31 May in the first part of the Federal Law Gazette (Bundesgesetzblatt). The changes apply both to the road traffic law (StVO) and the act on road traffic permit (StVZO).

Fines from EUR 60 to EUR 75

Anyone driving on ice or snow without proper tyres in the future is going to expect a fine of EUR 60. Furthermore, if the owner of the vehicle allows for driving the truck without proper tyres or orders travelling the route with that vehicle, they will pay a fine of EUR 75.
