Readers may recall that the Czech Republic was set to implement new laws to clamp down on trucks overtaking on stretches of road where a ban is in place. It has now emerged that the policing of the bans has also been beefed up via the use of a helicopter.

In a recent press release, the police revealed that 53 road traffic violations were recorded with the help of a helicopter during a monitoring campaign on Monday.

Traffic police officers from the Nová Ves motorway department, together with the Special Surveillance Department of Bohemia and Moravia and a police helicopter unit, all cooperated to stop and check trucks that had violated the overtaking ban. The police also checked for compliance with speed limits and other rules of the road.

Police say the aim of the campaign was to make truck drivers aware of the importance of obeying the rules of the road, to raise awareness of the dangers of overtaking, and to encourage drivers to behave safely and responsibly on the motorway.

The campaign saw officers record 22 HGV overtaking ban violations and 53 breaches of road traffic rules in total.

The Czech police adds that lorry drivers who violate the overtaking ban can receive a fine from ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 CZK as well as a driving ban of between 6 and 12 months.
