HHLA introduces fully digitalised truck handling at Hamburg terminals

Truck drivers accessing Hamburg’s HHLA Container Terminals will now benefit from a fully digitalised system, following the rollout of the passify app at the Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). The move marks the final stage of HHLA’s transition away from physical trucker cards, which had been in use across its Hamburg terminals.

Since the beginning of the year, over 200,000 truck arrivals have been processed digitally using the passify app, which was previously implemented at the Burchardkai (CTB) and Tollerort (CTT) terminals. The app allows drivers to book slots, check in digitally, and identify themselves through two-factor authentication, enhancing both efficiency and security.

Currently, more than 13,000 truck drivers and hauliers are registered users of passify. According to Rebecca Vick, Director of Container Development Hamburg at HHLA, the introduction of the app is a step forward in streamlining logistics operations:

“By implementing passify, we are not only making truck processing at our Hamburg container terminals more secure and efficient – we’re also setting a new standard in the digitalisation of logistics processes.”

From the perspective of drivers, the app consolidates all necessary documentation and information for terminal access in one place. Additionally, it integrates with gate processes, guiding drivers through all handling steps.

The app was developed by HHLA Next, HHLA’s innovation unit, and has since been established as a standalone company, passify GmbH. Plans for future developments include new features like a mobile self-service terminal and broader international rollouts, with the app already operational at a Romanian hinterland terminal.

To ensure a smooth transition, HHLA and the passify team provided support to drivers and haulage firms, including a step-by-step registration guide and FAQs on the HHLA website.

Truck drivers using passify can expect improved security standards compliant with the globally recognised ISPS Code, alongside faster and more streamlined terminal access.
