The new law, which is expected to come into force in early 2024, will increase the fine for using a mobile phone while driving from €165-660 to €422-1,697. Drivers who are caught using a mobile phone while driving will also have their license suspended for 15 days to two months for the first offence.

If a driver is caught using a mobile phone while driving again within two years, they will face a license suspension of one to three months, a fine of €644-2,588, and a reduction of 8-10 points from their license.

The new law will also introduce stricter rules for speed cameras and fines for illegal parking. Drivers who are caught speeding inside a town twice in one year will face a fine of up to €1,084 and a license suspension of 15 to 30 days. Fines for parking in disabled bays, bus lanes, and other restricted areas will also be increased.
