Half of Lithuania’s registered lorries are less than three years old, placing the country third behind Germany and Luxembourg, says a recent study published by the International Transport and Logistics Alliance (ITLA) based in Lithuania.

The organisation’s press release says that this achievement is thanks to the efforts of Lithuanian transport companies, who have invested in sustainable solutions for their businesses in recent years.

“By complying with the highest environmental standards, Lithuanian truck fleets emit far less nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter than their older counterparts”, adds Povilas Drižas, Secretary General of ITLA.

Drižas added that Lithuanian transport and logistics firms primarily export their services to Western Europe, where climate change issues are high on the agenda. The majority of the HGVs registered in Lithuania comply with the highest environmental standards, featuring Euro-6 engines that emit fewer greenhouse gases and require less fuel.

Compared to older engine standards, Euro-6 engines emit several times fewer nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide, and particulate matter.

“By investing in sustainable development, Lithuanian transport companies are also helping to secure their competitive edge on the international stage”.

The study is based on 2019 Eurostat data according to which Germany had the newest fleet of HGVs, with 58% of its vehicles being less than three years old.

Luxembourg ranked second with 51%, followed by Lithuania with 49%. In contrast, over half of all lorries in Greece and Bulgaria were more than a decade old.
