Police officers in Poland have stressed the importance of adequate rest after a truck driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a ditch at the side of the motorway. The driver suffered several injuries and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

The accident occured early on Wednesday morning on Poland’s A4 motorway. The driver was heading in the direction of the German border when he fell asleep at the wheel. As a result, his vehicle pulled veered off the road and crashed into a ditch. According to the police, the driver was sober.

In light of the accident, Sergeant Aleksandra Rodecka stressed the importance of careful planning of routes and rest stops:

“Even a few minutes of a break, during which we get out of the vehicle and take some fresh air, may prove beneficial and save us from a possible road incident that may happen in the event of fainting or falling asleep at the wheel,” says the police officer.
