A lorry driver who used another person’s tachograph card and licence to violate rest period rules has been banned from driving for 2.5 years, deported from Denmark, and fined €9,000.

According to Danish road transport website transportmagasinet.dk, the driver in question, a Latvian national, was the subject of a routine police check back in October.

The police then discovered that the driver had been switching between his documents and that of another driver, making it look like he had observed his rest period in the process. The man’s own tachograph card was found wrapped up in tin foil and hidden under a mat in the cabin.

According to the police, the 38-year-old drove a single day almost uninterrupted, with only a single rest of an hour and four minutes.

Late last month, the court ruled that the driver would be deported from Denmark for four years and that he may not sit behind the wheel of a HGV for two and a half years. In addition, he was sentenced to 20 days probation and fined €9,000.

On top of that, the driver’s truck is currently being held by the Danish authorities and the haulier who employed him has been fined roughly €53,700.
