Lorry driver detained after failed attempt to bribe police for €5

A Turkish lorry driver has been detained after trying to bribe three Bulgarian police officers with a single 5-euro banknote, says the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior. As it turns out, offering a bribe for a minimal amount of foreign currency wasn't an effective means of avoiding a fine for not wearing a seat belt.

According to reports in Bulgaria, the incident occurred on a regional road in the Bulgarian town of Simeonovgrad on Tuesday. Road traffic police spotted and subsequently pulled over a Renault lorry whose 42-year-old Turkish driver was not wearing a seat belt.

During the control, the driver handed over his documents for inspection and slipped in a folded €5 banknote in his passport.

His goal was to avoid the fine for not wearing a seatbelt, which is said to be around €50.

Unsurprisingly, the bribe was rejected. For his efforts, the driver ended up being held in custody for 24 hours.
