Maersk has opened a new logistics centre in Bremerhaven. Located around 23 kilometres from the container terminal, the facility will serve as a sea freight-related distribution and fulfilment centre for a wide range of customer segments – from consumer goods and fashion items to automotive components.
According to the company, the site covers approximately 76,580 square metres, including 66,000 square metres of covered storage space, spread across two buildings. It is designed with efficiency and sustainability in mind, offering 87,360 pallet spaces, 64 loading bays, charging stations for electric trucks, a photovoltaic system, and heat pumps.
Thanks to its strategic proximity to the port and multimodal connections via the A27 motorway and rail links, Maersk aims to shorten lead times and reduce delays in the supply chain.
“Bremerhaven is an important hub for us. That’s why we’re investing here and gaining asset control, so we can respond quickly and flexibly to customers in emergencies,” said Frank Pieper, Head of Contract Logistics in Northern Europe at Maersk, speaking to DVZ.
The geographical location is advantageous for many customers: short distances between the terminal and the warehouse facilitate container logistics and minimise the risk of detention and demurrage costs. The travel time between the container terminal and the logistics centre is less than 30 minutes – an important factor for time-critical supply chains.
Maersk also highlights the sustainability standards of the new warehouse. In addition to using renewable energy and environmentally friendly heating technology, the facility has been awarded a Gold Certificate by the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB). The warehouse also complies with TAPA-A security standards, ensuring the safety of goods.
