In today's Last Mile Brief, we bring you news of more parcel lockers coming to the Island of Ireland, as well as the Royal Mail's international delivery service restarting, and more possible regulation coming to express food delivery companies operating in the USA.

Today’s headline story: OOHPod extends network on Island of Ireland with Lidl deal

Parcel locker company OOHPod has extended its network in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland courtesy of a deal with Lidl. Thanks to the partnership, OOHPod is bringing its lockers to numerous premises of the well-known supermarket chain.

OOHPod parcel lockers are currently in place at Lidl Northern Ireland stores in Castlereagh, Newtownards, Shore Road Belfast and Lisburn, with additional lockers being rolled out at further sites across the region.

In the Republic of Ireland, OOHPod lockers can be found at Lidl stores in Dublin, Charleville, Mitchelstown and Cork.

Unlike most parcel locker networks in Europe, OOHPod requires consumers to pay for the convenience of having their goods stored in a locker. This comes on top of the price of the delivery from a consumer’s chosen courier.

While such a solution is unheard of in countries such as Poland, a similar model was used in Ireland by Parcel Motel, which ceased trading at the end of last month.

OOHPod customers can opt to “pay as you go” by registering a payment method and only pay each time a parcel arrives. For regular customers, there are two also discounted subscription bundles available. For £7.50/€8.85 per month Standard Subscription, customers can have three uses of a locker for a 48-hour period each time. A £17/€19.95 per month Premium Monthly subscription gives 10 uses of a locker per month of 48 hours each time per use.

Ireland’s parcel locker network also has a long way to go until it reaches anywhere near maturity. OOHPod’s network, according to the company’s own website, is composed of 29 lockers spanning the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Competitor AnPost has over 40 parcel lockers in the Republic of Ireland alone.
