The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets has issued its latest post and parcel monitor, which found that 43 million fewer parcels were sent in the country in 2022 than in the previous year.
Figures from the report show that the number of parcels sent in the Netherlands rose from 399 million in 2019 to 654 million in 2021. However, following the end of lockdowns and the inflation sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, parcel volumes fell last year.
The report also states that PostNL and DHL are the two largest market players in the Netherlands’ parcel delivery market (both in B2B and B2C), with a market share of approximately 55% and approximately 40% respectively.
Finally, the authors of the report said they would conduct more research into the performance of mail and parcel delivery operators in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets said it had received plenty of complaints and about letters and parcels being delivered late or even being lost. The report also says 91.4% of letterbox deliveries were sent on time in 2022, which is below the legal requirement of 95% that PostNL should meet.
