Planning permission granted for 24-hour truck stop in Kent

Folkestone and Hythe District Council has granted planning permission for a 53-space, 24-hour truck stop to be constructed on the site of Lympne Industrial Estate, about an 8.5-mile drive from the entrance/exit to the Channel Tunnel.

The plans, which were approved on Tuesday evening, include an on-site building with toilets, changing rooms and showers. It has also been proposed that an online booking system be used to allow trucks to reserve a space at the new facility.

However, according to one councillor, the plans state that there will only be two bins on site. It is also reported that some locals have expressed concern about “noise and littering” caused by the facility, although only one person registered an official complaint about the plans.

As Kent Online reports, a housing development is still set to be built nearby the lorry park. In recent times, there have been examples of individuals purchasing properties nearby HGV facilities and routes, then complaining afterwards. One would hope this is isn’t repeated here.

The announcement of the truck stop construction comes after a Kent MP said earlier this month that plans by Moto to build a facility with parking spaces for 200 trucks are still “a long way” from being granted permission.

Conservative MP Tom Tugendhat is quoted as saying that while he understands the need for HGV parking in the region, he also appreciates “deep concerns about the impact of this particular proposal on the local environment given the greenbelt status.”
