200 new parking spaces have been added to the Maasvlakte Plaza truck parking lot in the port of Rotterdam. With 567 spaces, this facility is now the largest guarded truck parking lot in the world.

Due to the very high occupancy rate of over 90%, it was necessary to expand Maasvlakte Plaza in the port of Rotterdam. The occupancy rate of this popular parking lot is expected to increase further after the expansion.

This concept sets a new standard for guarded parking lots: safe, clean, with excellent facilities for drivers and their trucks, in the immediate vicinity of large terminals and distribution centres. It will improve the accessibility of the port and contribute to a significant increase in logistics efficiency in the Port of Rotterdam,” said Ronald Paul, Operations Director of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

The Rotterdam Port Authority explains that creating additional parking spaces for trucks will also contribute to road safety. Thanks to the high level of safety and modern infrastructure, truck drivers are better able to relax better  on the road and are much less likely to have to park on roadsides, driveways and exits, in commercial or residential areas.

So that truck drivers do not have to waste time on driving around when everyone is looking for a place to rest, the first two hours of parking are free in the evening.

By the end of 2022, the SecureNL consortium, which is responsible for the expansion of Maasvlakte Plaza, will build a total of 765 new truck parking spaces at 4 locations: Nobis Asten in North Brabant, Truckstop Venlo in Limburg, the new truck park near Dordrecht and at Maasvlakte Plaza.

All these facilities are located along the so-called top corridors, i.e. the most important arteries for European freight traffic. The project was co-financed by the EU financial instrument “Connecting Europe”.
