According to GEODIS, the new route, which is already in operation, marks the first direct rail link between the two countries.

On its inaugural journey, the new service transported goods in 44 containers, each with a payload capacity of 26 tons.

The freight departed from the Łódź terminal and arrived in Barcelona after three days, from where last mile distribution was carried out by road.

The train then returned to Poland with imported goods from Spain. This back-and-forth service, which will run weekly, replaces the equivalent of 44 truck journeys.

Initially, the rail service will operate once a week, with trains leaving Łódź every Tuesday and returning from Barcelona on Fridays. GEODIS plans to increase the frequency to twice weekly as demand grows.

Commenting on the news, Marc Vollet, Chief Operations Officer at GEODIS European Road Network, said:

“The launch of the new Łódź – Barcelona rail connection provides customers with numerous benefits, including punctual transportation and significant reductions in CO2 emissions. GEODIS is committed to expanding its intermodal solutions, and we have ambitious plans to increase the frequency of this service.”

Meanwhile, in a separate announcement, Geodis has said it shall use wind-powered ships for freight transport.

Designed by Zéphyr & Borée, these low-emission commercial ships are powered by sails and alternative fuels. GEODIS claims the ships will cut CO2 emissions in half and offer sailing times competitive with those of conventional vessels.

Starting in 2025, the low-emission vessels will make weekly journeys between Le Havre, Antwerp and the East Coast of the United States, with an equivalent service from Mediterranean ports.
