Annual losses due to cargo theft in Europe amount to 6-7 billion euros. According to the international road transport unit IRU, 75% of such incidents occur in unguarded parking lots. IRU has been working for the past year with the European Commission on a study to investigate the condition of parking infrastructure and to define common standards for safe parking areas for trucks in the European Union. 

Safe parking lots

Incidents usually occur at night, in car parks, or dedicated parking areas near motorways. Unfortunately, there are not enough secure parking areas in Europe, s. In the near future, the European Commission plans to allocate 178 million euros for parking security and infrastructure development within the EU. The funding will go to those entrepreneurs who decide to build parking lots or upgrade existing parking lots in accordance with SSTPA (Safe and Secure Truck Park Area Standards).
