A severe hailstorm pummeled vehicles on Italy’s A1 motorway between Parma and Piacenza on Monday, causing huge damage to the windscreens of many cars. Video footage nonetheless shows that most trucks avoided noticeable damage.

According to Sky News Italy, Monday’s storm caused broken windshields, rear-end collisions and serious traffic problems. The hail between Parma and Piacenza damaged hundreds of cars and the motorway had to be temporarily closed.

Local newspaper Regio Serra reports that some of the hailstones were as large as golf balls, so it’s little surprise yesterday’s storm caused so much damage and disruption.

Footage filmed on smartphone nonetheless shows that many trucks managed to avoid the same damage that affected the cars. Naturally, the profile of the trucks means their windscreens are less susceptible to hail, and as the two videos above and below show, there seems to be very little damage to the windscreens or bodywork of any of the HGVs.

The motorway had to be temporarily closed to allow easy passage for the emergency services. This, on top of the original disruption caused by the storm itself,  resulted in tailbacks as long as 8 kilometres.
